Rotated PDF won't stay rotated? How to save the rotation for good

You turned the page the right way up, but the next time you open the file, or the person you sent it to opens it, it's sideways again. Here's why that happens and how to fix it.

Quick answer: many PDF readers, including the free Adobe Acrobat Reader and the PDF viewers in Chrome, Edge and Firefox, only turn the page on your screen. Nothing changes in the file. To turn the pages for good, open Rotate PDF, turn the pages, press Save rotated PDF, download it, and use or send the new file.

Where you rotated decides whether it saves

Where you turned the pageIs the rotation saved in the file?
Adobe Acrobat Reader (free), Rotate ViewNo. It only changes how the page looks on your screen.
The PDF viewer in Chrome, Edge or FirefoxNo. You can turn pages to read them, but not save them that way.
Adobe Acrobat (paid), Organize PagesYes, once you save the file.
Preview on a MacYes, once you save the file.
Rotate PDF on this siteYes. You download a new copy with the pages turned.

Why the rotation doesn't stick

1. You turned the view, not the page

This is the most common reason. Many PDF readers have two kinds of rotation: one that turns the page only on your screen, for easier reading, and one that changes the page in the file. The free Adobe Acrobat Reader and the PDF viewers in web browsers only have the first. On the Adobe Community forum in February 2024, a Community Expert explained that people in this situation are "rotating the view", and that the tool that changes the file, Rotate Page, isn't in the free Reader. A clue: if Save stays greyed out after you rotate, nothing in the file has changed. (One of Adobe's own how-to pages suggests saving after Rotate View; if Save is greyed out, that won't work.)

Browsers work the same way. Adobe's own guide to rotating PDFs notes that Chrome, Edge and Firefox let you rotate pages but don't let you save the rotated document, and on Microsoft's Tech Community forum in September 2026, two answers said Edge's rotate control is only a viewing adjustment.

2. The change wasn't saved, or the old file was sent

Some apps that can save rotation still wait for you to save. In others, including ours, you get a new copy and the original stays as it was. If you then attach the original to an email or a form, the person receiving it sees the old, sideways pages. Our Rotate PDF saves the new copy with -rotated at the end of the name, for example lease-rotated.pdf, usually in your Downloads folder. Attach that one.

3. The PDF doesn't allow changes

Some PDFs have a permissions password that stops anyone changing them, even though they open normally. Apps that respect these limits won't save a rotation, and when you press Save rotated PDF, our tool shows a message asking you to remove the password with Unlock PDF first. If you know the password, Unlock PDF removes it, and you can then rotate the unlocked copy. If you don't, ask whoever sent the file for a version that isn't locked.

4. It looks right on screen but prints sideways

If the file opens the right way up but comes out of the printer turned, the problem is usually the print settings, not the file. In the print window, check the orientation setting (portrait, landscape or automatic) and print a single page to test.

How to rotate PDF pages for good with Rotate PDF

  1. Open Rotate PDF and choose your PDF. The file opens on your device and isn't uploaded. A preview of every page appears, so you can see which ones are sideways.
  2. Turn the pages that need it. Each page has its own rotate button, and each click turns it a quarter turn clockwise. To turn every page at once, use Rotate all left or Rotate all right.
  3. Press Save rotated PDF, then Download PDF. The rotation is saved in the file, so PDF readers open the pages turned.
  4. Check it. Open the downloaded file, not the original, and look at the pages you turned. Then use this file wherever you need it.

Rotating doesn't redraw the page, so text and pictures keep their quality. The tool sets each page's orientation inside the file, which PDF readers follow when they open the page. If your PDF is a fillable form, its fields are kept. In our automated test, we turned page 1 of a two-page form with a name box and a tick box. In the saved file, both fields were still there, the name already filled in was kept, and so were the file's bookmark and title.

If you also need to remove or reorder pages, Organize PDF does all three in one place.

Other ways to do it

  • Preview on a Mac: choose View > Thumbnails, select the pages, and choose Tools > Rotate Left or Rotate Right (Command-L or Command-R). Then save the file.
  • Adobe Acrobat (paid): use the Organize Pages tool to turn the pages, rather than the view rotation, then save the file.

Tips

  • Turn only the pages that need it. A document can mix portrait and landscape pages, such as a letter with a wide table. Turn just the sideways ones, not all of them.
  • Fix it at the scanner next time. Many scanner and phone apps let you turn a page before saving the PDF, which saves a step later.

Questions

Why does my PDF go back to sideways after I rotate it?

Many PDF readers, including Adobe Acrobat Reader and the PDF viewers in web browsers, only turn the page on your screen. Nothing is saved in the file, so it opens the old way next time. Use a tool that changes the file, such as Rotate PDF, and use the new copy it saves.

Can I rotate a PDF and save it in Adobe Acrobat Reader?

Not with the free Reader's Rotate View, which only changes how the page looks on your screen. The paid Adobe Acrobat can turn the pages themselves with its Organize Pages tool. Rotate PDF on this site does it for free.

Can I rotate just one page of a PDF?

Yes. In Rotate PDF, each page has its own rotate button. Click it once for each quarter turn clockwise, then save.

Does rotating a PDF reduce its quality?

No. Rotating changes the direction the page is shown in, not the page itself, so text and pictures are unchanged.

Will a fillable form still work after rotating?

Yes. Rotate PDF only changes the direction setting of each page in a new copy of your file, so form fields are kept. Your original file isn't changed.

Is my PDF uploaded when I rotate it here?

No. Rotate PDF runs in your browser, and your file stays on your device.
