How to edit a PDF

  1. Open your PDF

Choose the file or drag it onto the page. Every page appears as a large preview.

  2. Edit any page

Click a page to open the editor. To change words or pictures already there, choose Edit text & images and click them: type new words, or move, resize, replace or delete a picture. You can also add text, today's date, images, signatures, drawings, highlights, boxes or white-out. Press Done when the page is ready. Undo takes back any step.

  3. Save your PDF

Press Save PDF. The old words you changed are removed from the file and the new ones drawn in their place. The pages keep their order and rotation.

About this tool

Use this to fix a typo, change a name, date or price, swap a logo, fill in a form that has no fields, sign a letter or highlight the lines that matter. With Edit text & images, every line of text and every picture on the page is outlined: click one to change it. You can also click anywhere to add something new, then move it, resize it, change its colour or remove it. Your edits show on the page previews, so you can check every page before you save.

When you change words, the old ones are really removed from the file, not just hidden, and the new ones are drawn in the same place. The new words use a standard font (similar to Helvetica, Times or Courier), so they may look slightly different from the original font. Now and then a PDF stores its text in a way that can't be changed safely; then the old words are covered with the page's colour instead, and the result tells you. Lines and shapes drawn in the PDF can't be changed yet (cover them with White-out), and a scanned page is one big picture, so run OCR PDF on it first to get text you can edit. White-out only hides what's underneath: the covered words stay in the file.

Like every tool on this site, Edit PDF runs inside your browser. The file is opened in this tab's memory and is never uploaded or stored. The original pages are copied exactly, so their text stays sharp and selectable.

Questions

Can I change the text that's already in my PDF?

Yes. Open the page, choose Edit text & images, click the line you want to change and type the new words. To delete words, clear the text. When you save, the old words are removed from the file and the new ones drawn in their place. The new text uses a standard font, so it may look slightly different from the original. If some words can't be removed safely, they're covered with the page's colour instead, and the result tells you how many. To rewrite a whole document, PDF to Word turns it into a document you can edit.

Can I change the pictures in my PDF?

Yes. With Edit text & images on, click a picture to move it, resize it, replace it with one of your own, or delete it. Pictures that are turned at an angle, or that sit inside other parts of the page, can't be changed yet. Lines and shapes drawn in the PDF can't be changed either; cover them with White-out.

Why can't I edit the text on my scanned PDF?

A scanned page is one picture of the paper, so it has no text to change. Run OCR PDF on it first to recognise the words, then open the result here.

Does White-out remove the text underneath?

No. White-out places a white box over the text, so it can't be seen when the page is viewed or printed, but the original words are still in the file. Someone could select or copy them, or remove the box with other software. Don't use it to hide private information such as account numbers. That needs proper redaction software, which permanently deletes the content.

What can I add to a page?

Text in three fonts and any size or colour, today's date, images (JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF or BMP), a signature you draw, type or upload, freehand drawings with a pen in several colours and thicknesses, highlights, coloured boxes and white-out. Any item can be moved, resized, duplicated or removed, and put on every page at once.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. The file is opened and saved by your browser on your own device. It's never sent to us or anyone else, and it's gone when you close the tab.

Can I edit a password-protected PDF?

Yes, if you know the password and are allowed to change the file. You'll be asked for it after choosing the file. A PDF that opens freely but blocks editing needs its permissions (owner) password. The saved copy doesn't have a password; add one with Protect PDF if you need it.

Will the saved PDF look the same as the original?

Yes, apart from what you changed. Everything you didn't touch is copied exactly, in the same order and with the same rotation, so text stays sharp and selectable. New and changed text uses standard PDF fonts, which show Western European letters; other alphabets and emoji appear as question marks.
