About this tool
Use this when you need to change a document you only have as a PDF: update a CV, reuse text from a report, or fix a letter. The text comes out as normal paragraphs with headings, bold and italic, so it reflows and can be edited like any Word document.
PDFs store text as positioned lines rather than paragraphs, so the layout is rebuilt in a simpler form. Columns, tables and text boxes become flowing text with tabs, and fonts that aren't on your computer are swapped for similar ones. Check the result before you rely on it.
Scanned PDFs are pictures of pages with no text inside them. For those, choose "Exact look, as pictures": each page goes into Word as a picture. Turning scanned text into editable text needs text recognition (OCR), which this tool doesn't do.
Questions
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. The Word document is made in your browser on your own device. Your PDF isn't sent to us or anyone else.
Will the Word document look exactly like the PDF?
The text, headings, bold, italic and pictures are kept, but the layout is simplified so you can edit it. If you need an identical look, choose "Exact look, as pictures".
Can I convert a scanned PDF?
You can put the scanned pages into Word as pictures. Editable text from a scan needs text recognition (OCR), which isn't available here.
Does it work with password-protected PDFs?
Remove the password first with our Unlock PDF tool (you'll need to know it), then convert.
Which programs can open the result?
Microsoft Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice, Apple Pages and most other word processors open .docx files.
