How to convert Excel to PDF

  1. Choose your spreadsheet

Pick a .xlsx or .csv file from your computer or phone, or drag it onto the page.

  2. Pick the sheets and layout

Convert every sheet or just some, choose A4 or US Letter, and fit the columns to the page width. Gridlines and a repeated header row are on by default.

  3. Download the PDF

Check the page previews, then save your PDF. Nothing is uploaded.

About this tool

A PDF is the easy way to send a budget, a price list, a timesheet or a report to someone who doesn't need to edit it. It opens the same on every device and prints without columns spilling onto extra pages.

Each sheet is laid out the way it looks in your spreadsheet app: numbers, dates, currencies and percentages keep their formats, and fonts, bold and italic text, cell colors, borders, merged cells, column widths and row heights are kept. Hidden rows, columns and sheets are left out, and a print area set in the file is respected. Rows are never cut in half between pages, and wide sheets are scaled down to fit, or split across pages when they're too wide to read at one page width.

The conversion runs entirely in your browser, so salaries, accounts and customer lists never leave your device. The text in the PDF can be searched and copied. Charts, pictures and comments aren't included yet, and formulas show the result last saved in the file.

Questions

Which files can I convert?

Excel workbooks in the .xlsx format (and .xlsm, without running macros), plus CSV files. Google Sheets, LibreOffice and Numbers can all save or download .xlsx. Older .xls files (Excel 97–2003) can't be read in the browser. Open them and use Save As to choose Excel Workbook (.xlsx) first.

Are charts and pictures included?

Not yet. The cells, text and formatting are converted, but charts, pictures, shapes and comments are left out, and the tool tells you when a file has them. To keep a chart, save that sheet as PDF from Excel, then use Merge PDF to combine the files.

Will formulas show the right values?

They show the result saved in the file the last time it was calculated, which is what you see when you open it in Excel. Formulas aren't recalculated here, so save the file after any changes.

How are wide sheets handled?

By default, all the columns are fitted onto one page width and wide sheets are turned to landscape. If a sheet is so wide that its text would become too small, its columns are split across pages instead, left part first. Choose Actual size to keep the original size.

Is my spreadsheet uploaded?

No. The PDF is made in your browser on your own device. Your spreadsheet isn't sent to us or anyone else, so nothing needs deleting afterwards.

Can I convert a password-protected spreadsheet?

Not while it has a password to open it. Open it in your spreadsheet app, remove the password or save an unprotected copy, then convert that. Sheets that are only protected against editing convert normally.
