How to convert PDF to Excel

  1. Choose your PDF

Pick a PDF from your computer or phone, or drag it onto the page.

  2. Pick the sheets

Put everything on one sheet, so a table that runs over several pages stays one table, or give each page its own sheet.

  3. Download the Excel file

Your .xlsx is made on your device. Open it in Excel, Google Sheets, LibreOffice or Numbers.

About this tool

Use this when the numbers you need are stuck in a PDF: a bank or card statement to sort by date, an invoice to check, a price list or a report table to work with. Each table row becomes a spreadsheet row with one cell per column, and nothing is merged across cells, so sorting and filtering work straight away.

Amounts become real numbers, not text, so you can add them up at once. 1,234.56, (12.00), -5, £20 and 12% all work, and the tool works out from the whole document whether it writes decimals with a point (1,234.56) or a comma (1.234,56). Account numbers that start with 0, long reference numbers and dates are kept exactly as written. Columns are found from the gaps between them and from any borders drawn on the page, and a description that wraps onto two lines stays in one cell.

Text outside the tables, such as the account name or a total, is kept too, one line per row, so nothing goes missing. Headings and page numbers printed at the top or bottom of every page are left out, and a table that carries on to the next page is joined into one. Scanned PDFs are read with text recognition (OCR) on your device first, in any of 28 languages; check every number from a scan before you rely on it.

Bank statements are some of the most private files people convert, and many online converters upload them to a server. Here the PDF is read in your browser, and the spreadsheet is made on your device. Nothing is sent anywhere. Need the text as a document instead? Use PDF to Word. Working on several files? The Workspace can save your pages as an Excel file too. Going the other way? Excel to PDF turns a spreadsheet into a PDF.

Questions

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. The Excel file is made in your browser on your own device. Your PDF isn't sent to us or anyone else, which matters for bank statements and invoices.

Will the numbers add up in Excel?

Yes. Amounts are saved as numbers, with their decimal places, thousands separators, currency signs and minus signs, so SUM and sorting work. Account numbers starting with 0, long ID numbers and dates stay as text, exactly as written.

Can I convert a bank statement that runs over several pages?

Yes. Choose Everything on one sheet. The transactions from every page go into one table, and the column headings printed again at the top of each page are left out.

Does it work with scanned PDFs?

Yes. Scanned pages are read with text recognition (OCR) on your device in the language you choose. It works best on clear, straight scans. Check every number from a scan before you use it.

Why are some columns joined or split?

PDFs store positioned text, not cells, so columns are worked out from the gaps between them and any borders drawn on the page. Tables with very uneven spacing may need a quick fix in Excel.

Does it work with password-protected PDFs?

Remove the password first with our Unlock PDF tool (you'll need to know it), then convert.
