About this tool

500 KB is enough for most documents of up to around ten scanned pages to stay comfortably readable, or for many more pages of typed text. Because there's more room than at 100 or 200 KB, the result usually looks very close to the original.

As with every limit, we try a light clean-up first so text stays selectable, then move to saving pages as images only if needed. We aim below 500,000 bytes so the file is accepted however the site counts kilobytes.

Need a smaller file? Use the 200 KB or 100 KB pages, or pick Exact size on Compress PDF for any limit, including 1 MB and 2 MB.

Questions

How do I reduce a PDF to under 500 KB?

Choose your PDF on this page and press Compress PDF. The 500 KB limit is preset, and you'll see the exact size of the result before you download it.

Will compressing to 500 KB lower the quality?

Only as much as needed. We start with the sharpest settings and stop as soon as the file fits, so with a 500 KB limit most documents look almost the same as before.

Can I compress a PDF to 1 MB or 2 MB instead?

Yes. On Compress PDF, choose Exact size, then pick 1 MB, 2 MB or type your own limit.

What if my PDF has many pages?

Exact size works on up to 200 pages at a time. For longer files, or if the result is still too big, split the PDF into parts and compress each one.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. Compression runs entirely in your browser on your own device, and your file is never sent anywhere.
